Adopt-A-Cat Month
It is estimated that approximately five to seven million companion animals enter animal shelters each year. Further it is estimated that approximately 70 percent of the cats, many of whom are healthy and adoptable, are euthanized simply due to lack of space and resources. Help a cat or kitten today! For a list of local shelters near you, see page 29 of the June Issue.
K-9 Heroics - Max's New Beginning
Max is a Belgian Malinois and came to the U.S. through a vendor in Alabama who purchased him from a farmer in Holland. As it turns out, Max actually guarded ducks (the rather large, white-feathered variety) in his previous life. It bacame apparent rather quickly that Max missed his owner, and his personality showed it. Max seemed lethargic and overall was disinterested when we tried to do patrol training. Would he become the kind of dog that would be a hero or would he end up in the pound? Read Max's story on page 7 of the June issue.
Addison's Disease in Dogs
Addison's disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) is a hormonal disorder resulting from deficient production of glucocorticoids (cortisol) and/or mineralocorticoids (aldosterone). These hormones are made in the adrenal glands, which are in the abdomen. Dogs with Addison's disease will require lifelong treatment, and most have a good prognosis. Read more about this disease on page 14 of the June issue.
